Richard Mascall immigrated from England but grew up in Canada. His classical music training occurred at North Toronto Collegiate Institute, the Royal Conservatory of Music (with Dr. Anthony Dawson and Pierre Gallant), and the University of Toronto (1997), where his teachers included Chan Ka Nin, Walter Buczynski and Derek Holman. A year’s study with Glenn Buhr at Wilfrid Laurier University and a year’s post-graduate study with Christos Hatzis at the University of Toronto completed his formal education. Initially inspired by the music of Stravinsky, Prokofiev and Bartok, he has also been influenced by the American John Adams. His prize-winning work is a synthesis of modern jazz, world music and the European classical tradition. Richard has recently moved to the GreyBruce area and currently works as a composer/arranger violinist, conductor and music educator. He writes for many different instruments and formats including film, as well as having works performed often by groups such as the Talisker Players of Toronto.
